NVQ in Occupational Health and Safety

NVQs have been designed to enable candidates to prove their competence in a given discipline by carrying out the role in a real life work situation. Evidence for the qualification is gathered by Assessor observation and presentation of documented activities. This makes the award ideal for safety professionals who by nature document all of their activities.

What are NVQs?

National Vocational Qualifications are government led qualifications which are structured to recognise people’s competence or ability to do their job to the required standard. They are developed by representatives from leading groups within the specified industry/sector and must be approved by the National Council for Vocational Qualifications (NCVQ)

What role does City & Guilds play?

City & Guilds is the awarding body which provides the framework and regulations for the delivery of the NVQ. City & Guilds issue certificates to successful candidates.

How do I prove I can do the job?

Simply by doing the job and collecting evidence to prove competence such as reports on your performance from your assessor or supervisor, or documentation produced as part of your work role.

How do City & Guilds check that I have the knowledge required to carryout the role of managing safety?

It is your assessor’s job to assess your evidence and ask questions to check your understanding. This is done during feedback sessions with your assessor and is not an exam. Areas covered will include:

MANAGEMENT OF RISKS

RISK CONTROL METHODS

ASSESSMENT OF FAILURE OR SUCCESS

THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM

STATUTE LAW AND EEC REGULATIONS

THE HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK ACT 1974

TOXICOLOGY

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

SAFE USE OF MACHINERY

SAFE USE OF ELECTRICITY

FIRE PREVENTION
